5 Ways St. Francis Can Help Deepen Your Love for God
5 Maneras en que San Francisco Puede Ayudarte a Profundizar tu Amor por Dios
People often associate St. Francis with nature, peace, and simplicity. Yet his entire life was centered on God, His mysteries, and His love. His example offers five ways to encounter God’s love more deeply:

Christ-Centered Life
Vida Centrada en Cristo
St. Francis was a man deeply in love with God. He put honoring God first. He embraced radical poverty yet gladly accepted the finest vestments, altar linens, and vessels for the Mass. In imitation, we can ask ourselves often: “Does this honor God? Is it aligned with the Gospel?”

Seeing the Person
Ver a la Persona
Captivated by the Incarnation, St. Francis sought to treat each person as “another Christ,” regardless of health, wealth, or status. We follow his example when we learn to see every person as a beloved child of God.

Delight in God’s Creation
Deléitate en la Creación de Dios
St. Francis famously delighted in and cared for creation, praising it as God’s handiwork. Even a sunset, flower, or beautiful landscape can become an invitation to praise God and grow closer to Him.

Simplicity of Life
Simplicidad de Vida
Most of us aren’t called to literally “leave everything” to follow Jesus. But we can declutter our homes, make room for silence, or limit digital distractions, freeing more of our attention for God and neighbor.

Humility of Heart
Humildad de Corazón
St. Francis’ humility flowed from his desire to love the person before him. He wanted people to walk away knowing, “God loves me!” When we’re with others, do we make the conversation about elevating ourselves, or about loving them? St. Francis experienced God’s love deeply and wanted everyone else to experience that same Love. His radical life points us back to the extravagant love of God and the life we’re called to live in response.
At all times and seasons, in every country and place, every day and all day, we must have a true and humble faith.

St. John Henry Newman
San John Henry Newman
St. John’s path to Roman Catholicism began when he read the Church Fathers while tutoring at Oxford University. After much prayer, study, and the guidance of a Passionist priest, he converted in 1845. He was ordained a priest in 1847 and founded an Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Birmingham. In 1879, he was nominated cardinal. His famous works include A Grammar of Assent and his Apologia. He spent his office writing and offering spiritual advice.

God Is Closer Than You Think
Dios Está Más Cerca de lo que Piensas
It’s easy to take God’s presence for granted because we already know He is everywhere. Yet His presence is personal and relational. He is with us because He wants to be with us. We see this throughout salvation history: in the Incarnation, His earthly ministry, the Cross, the Resurrection, and the sending of the Holy Spirit.
God seeks us, draws near to us, and remains with us. So whether your “today” feels like Good Friday, Easter Sunday, or an ordinary Tuesday, God is with you. And in the Eucharist, He invites you to draw near and be with Him.
I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Why Do Catholics Have Items Blessed?
¿Por qué los Católicos Bendicen Objetos?
Sacramentals are sacred signs instituted by the Church to praise God for His works and gifts and dedicate them to His service. While sacramentals take different forms, they always involve the Church’s prayer and often a blessing of a person, place, event, or object according to an approved rite.
For example, wedding rings are sacramentals; marriage is the Sacrament. The rings don’t make the marriage sacramental but remind and encourage spouses to live their vocation faithfully. Sacramentals deepen our devotion, support us on the path to salvation, and prepare our hearts to receive God’s grace.
Climb the Mountain. Bring Jesus Along.
Sube la Montaña. Lleva a Jesús Contigo.
Time in prayer is not a luxury or secondary to service, mission, or productivity. Nothing we do all day is more important than spending time with Jesus. Prayer gives life to our mission, and mission draws us back to prayer. We need both.
Necesitamos ambas.
Climb the mountain.
People may rightly say, “My work is my prayer.” Yet spouses would struggle to stay close if they only met to divide the chores. In the same way, we need time with God apart from our work. Following Christ requires knowing Him. We sit at His feet and let Him teach us. In His presence, we learn to see as He sees, value what He values, and love as He loves.
Seguir a Cristo requiere conocerlo.
Return to the plains.
We aren’t meant to stay on the mountain. Jesus sends us back into ordinary life carrying what we received in prayer: a peaceful presence, a new insight, a kind word at the right moment. Some even begin the day by asking God to place in their path the people He wants them to encounter.
The Christian life moves between the mountain and the plain: drawing close to Jesus in prayer, then carrying His presence into the world. And in both places, He remains at our side.

Mateo 22:34-40 — Los Dos Grandes Mandamientos

Jesus answered by going to the heart of them all: love God with your whole being, and love your neighbor as yourself. Everything begins and ends with love. And loving God means learning to love what, and whom, He loves. Jesus taught that these two commandments are the foundation of the entire Law.
Loving God may seem easier than loving our neighbor. Loving others means welcoming people we might naturally exclude, dismiss, or avoid. Jesus drew near to sinners, outcasts, the sick, and even those who opposed Him. Our love of neighbor is tested especially in how we treat the poor, the vulnerable, the difficult, and even our enemies. This is how God loves, and He calls us to love the same way.

What is the Franciscan Crown?
¿Qué es la Corona Franciscana?
The Franciscan Crown is a devotion that meditates on seven joys in Mary’s life: the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Birth of Jesus, the Adoration of the Magi, the Finding of Jesus in the Temple, the Resurrection, and Mary’s Assumption and Coronation as Queen of Heaven and Earth. The devotion is prayed using seven decades of Hail Marys and is also known as the Franciscan or Seraphic Rosary.
According to Franciscan tradition, the devotion began with a young man named James, who regularly wove crowns of roses to honor the Blessed Mother. After joining the Franciscans, he could no longer continue the practice and became so discouraged that he considered leaving the Order. Tradition holds that Mary appeared to James and gave him a new way to honor her: the Franciscan Crown.
Like the traditional Rosary, the Franciscan Crown is addressed to Mary but centered entirely on Jesus. By meditating on Mary’s seven joys, we contemplate the joyful and miraculous events of Christ’s life through the eyes of His mother. Rooted in the Gospel and marked by Franciscan simplicity, the Crown offers a distinctly Franciscan way to draw closer to Christ through Mary.

Living the Faith, Sharing the Light
Viviendo la Fe, Compartiendo la Luz

Keep the Flavor
Conserva el Sabor
In the ancient world, salt preserved what was valuable and gave food its flavor. Jesus warns that salt can lose its distinctiveness. Our faith can, too, when distraction, compromise, or indifference weakens our relationship with Him. Prayer is not another obligation to complete. It is time invested in the relationship that gives everything else its meaning.

Faith is meant to illuminate, offering direction, warmth, and hope. But like a lamp, faith needs fuel. A change of seasons often brings new routines, shifting schedules, and unexpected demands. Remember that our lives, our future, our peace, and our hope rest securely in the hands of the One who calmed the storm.

God is the friend of silence… The more we receive in silent prayer, the more we can give in our active life. We need silence to be able to touch souls. The essential thing is not what we say, but what God says to us and through us.

What Is the Confiteor?
¿Qué es el Confiteor?
The Confiteor is a prayer of repentance we offer at the beginning of Mass to acknowledge our sins and ask for God’s mercy. The word Confiteor means “I confess,” reflecting the prayer’s opening words: “I confess to almighty God.” As we say “through my fault,” we strike our breasts as a physical expression of sorrow and responsibility for our sins.
This gesture reminds us that we worship God with both body and soul and helps prepare our hearts to participate more fully in the Eucharist.
Look Closely; God Is at Work
Mira de Cerca; Dios está Obrando
We often expect God to work through dramatic signs or unmistakable miracles. Yet His providence frequently unfolds quietly and gradually. Pope Leo points to Jesus’ parables of the Kingdom (Matthew 13:24-43) as an answer to an enduring question: Where is God, and how is He at work?
God’s providence is constant, even when hidden.
When events do not unfold as we hoped, we can assume God is absent or inactive. Jesus’ parables invite us to trust that He is always at work, especially when His purposes are not immediately visible.
God works through what is small and ordinary.
“God favors smallness, a sign of his discreet love, by which he leaves us free to accept or reject him.” For Pope Leo, wheat growing among weeds, yeast leavening dough, and a tiny mustard seed reveal a Kingdom that often advances quietly, patiently, and steadily.
We are called to imitate God.
“God’s way with us must also become the way in which we live.” Building the Kingdom rarely requires extraordinary gestures. It begins with patience in difficulty, resisting rash judgment, fulfilling our responsibilities faithfully, and choosing love when it costs us. These ordinary acts become seeds through which God’s Kingdom takes root and grows.
Estamos llamados a imitar a Dios.

Matthew 21:28-32 — The “Yes” That Matters
Mateo 21:28-32 — El “Sí” que Importa
In this Gospel passage, Jesus tells of a father who asks his two sons to work in his vineyard. The first refuses but later repents and goes; the second readily agrees but fails to act. Jesus’ point is clear: doing the Father’s will matters more than merely professing obedience.
The parable challenges the religious complacency of the Pharisees, whose outward observance did not always reflect a heart open to God. By contrast, tax collectors and public sinners, though once far from God, responded to His mercy with repentance and conversion. Their former “no” became a genuine “yes,” demonstrated not simply in words but in a changed way of life.
This distinction remains essential for Christian discipleship. Faith cannot be reduced to appearances, good intentions, or religious language. A sincere “yes” to God takes concrete form through obedience, charity, repentance, and fidelity to our responsibilities. The parable is therefore both a warning against empty profession and a message of profound hope: our past does not determine our future. Whenever we turn back to God, He receives us with the joy of the shepherd who recovers the lost sheep (Luke 15:4-7).

Also known as Levi, he was a notorious tax collector (Mark 2:14). Working for the Romans would have made him unpopular but very rich. Yet St. Matthew left everything when Jesus called him. He wrote the Gospel according to Matthew, addressed to Jewish converts to Christianity.

Confession After Time Away
Confesión Después de un Tiempo
How can I go to Confession after a long time away?
¿Cómo puedo ir a Confesión después de mucho tiempo?
The Church encourages regular Confession (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1458), but travel and changing routines can make good spiritual habits easy to neglect. If it has been a while, come home to Reconciliation. Like the father in the Parable of the Prodigal Son, God waits to welcome, forgive, and restore us.
Prepare your heart.
An examination of conscience is more than listing failures. Consider where you have fallen short in loving God and your neighbor. Recognizing what sin has damaged helps begin the work of repair.
The priest will help.
Feeling nervous is normal. The priest can guide you through the Sacrament, offer counsel, and help you receive God’s mercy with confidence.

Learn His Pattern
Aprende Su Patrón
The Gospels show us how Jesus responded to the sick, the brokenhearted, the marginalized, and even His enemies. Scripture provides the pattern, while prayer and the Sacraments provide the grace to live it. The more we immerse ourselves in Christ’s life, the more naturally His way of loving becomes our own.
Two

Cultivate His Heart
Cultiva Su Corazón
Jesus describes Himself as “gentle and humble of heart” (Matthew 11:29). His humility comes from His complete obedience to the Father’s will. His gentleness is strength under perfect self-control, expressed in His patience, mercy, and compassion, even toward those who rejected Him. As we imitate His way of love, our own hearts are slowly transformed as His.

Show Genuine Interest
Muestra Interés Genuino
Jesus often asked open-ended questions, not because He lacked the answers, but to draw people out. “What do you seek?” (John 1:38). “What are you discussing with each other?” (Luke 24:17). Genuine love begins with genuine interest. Asking thoughtful questions communicates that people are seen, heard, and valued.
Four

Choose the Charitable Interpretation
Elige la Interpretación Caritativa
St. Theresa Margaret of the Sacred Heart wrote, “If the actions of our neighbors have a hundred sides, we ought always to look at them on the best side.” Love resists rushing to judgment and gives others the benefit of the doubt, creating space for understanding rather than suspicion.

Always Act Out of Love
Actúa Siempre por Amor
St. Paul exhorts us, “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). Jesus lived every moment in perfect love for His Father and for us. Following Christ means allowing love to shape not only our greatest sacrifices but also our smallest daily actions.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

St. Bernard of Clairvaux
San Bernardo de Claraval
Although born into wealth, St. Bernard desired a life of simplicity, holiness, and austerity. Born in 1090 in Fontaines, France, he entered the monastery at Citeaux in his twenties, followed by most of his family. Recognizing his holiness and noting the overcrowding of the monastery, the abbot sent St. Bernard to establish a new monastery in Clairvaux. St. Bernard went on to found monasteries for nuns, worked for the Holy See, and preached the Second Crusade.

More Than the Mission
Más que la Misión
No matter our age, we all need to hear these words: “I love you without measure.” At the Transfiguration, the Father declared of Jesus, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 17:5). He means those words for us as well. Before all else, we are God’s beloved children.
Significantly, the Father speaks these words before Jesus goes to the Cross, before His saving mission is complete. We often reverse that order, allowing our identity to depend on our accomplishments or faithfulness. But the Gospel reveals the opposite. God’s love is not earned but freely given. Our mission flows from our identity, not the other way around.
For I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.
Porque te he redimido; te he llamado por tu nombre, tú eres mío.

Why Do Catholics Pray Formula Prayers?
¿Por qué los Católicos Rezan Oraciones de Fórmula?
Formula prayers are not a substitute for personal prayer but a time-tested way of entering into it and deepening it. When the disciples asked Jesus how to pray, He gave them the Our Father (Matthew 6:9-13; Luke 11:2-4), a prayer to be prayed repeatedly. Scripture also contains many communal prayers, especially the Psalms, which served as Israel’s prayer book and remain the Church’s today.
By praying these inspired words, Catholics join generations of believers in worship. Whether at Mass or beside a hospital bed, formula prayers unite the faithful, expressing not only personal devotion but also the shared faith of the whole Church.
What to Do When You Don’t Feel Like Praying
Qué Hacer Cuando no Tienes Ganas de Orar
Not feeling like praying is something even faithful Christians experience. In fact, seasons of dryness can be a normal part of spiritual growth. While they may have different causes, they do not necessarily mean something is wrong. Here are three ways to respond:
Pray about not wanting to pray.
Bring your reluctance to God. You don’t have to overcome your feelings before coming to Him. Honest prayer is still prayer, and God meets you with love exactly where you are.
Ora sobre no querer orar.
Lleva tu reticencia a Dios.
Keep it simple.
We value brief messages from those we love: “I love you,” “Good luck today,” or “Thinking of you.” Prayer can be that simple. The goal is relationship, not length. A heartfelt “God, help me,” “Jesus, I trust in You,” or “Come, Holy Spirit” is enough.
Mantenlo sencillo.
Choose presence over performance.
Approach prayer the way you would spending time with a close friend. We don’t cancel plans with someone we love simply because we’re tired. In the same way, keep showing up. God delights in your company (Proverbs 8:31). He is not looking for a perfect performance but a heart that continues to seek Him, even when prayer feels dry or difficult.

Matthew 16:21-27 — God’s Ways Are Not Our Ways
Mateo 16:21-27 — Los Caminos de Dios no son Nuestros Caminos
At first glance, this passage seems like bad news. Jesus predicts His own death, a revelation that must have stunned the disciples. They had just come to recognize Him as the long-awaited Messiah. Instead of leading a triumphant victory over Rome, Jesus spoke of suffering, rejection, and execution. To them, it looked like failure, not triumph.
Peter responded as many of us do when faced with suffering: he resisted the Cross. He wanted Jesus to avoid it and was sharply rebuked. Yet had Jesus turned aside, we would have remained in our sins, separated from God. Instead, He freely embraced the Cross. From the perspective of the Resurrection, what appeared to be defeat was in fact Christ’s decisive victory over sin and death.
God desires our happiness, not merely our temporary comfort. He desires our eternal joy. The Christian life is not about avoiding the crosses God permits but embracing them with trust, as Jesus did. And we never carry them alone. Christ walks beside us, bearing the heavier end of every cross.
Dios desea nuestra felicidad, no solo nuestro consuelo temporal.

Why Do Catholics Do That?
¿Por qué los Católicos Hacen Eso?
Can the Pope make mistakes if he’s infallible?
Yes. The pope is human and, like anyone else, can make mistakes in his personal opinions, decisions, or everyday statements. Papal infallibility does not mean the pope is incapable of error. Rather, it means that, under specific conditions, the Holy Spirit preserves him from definitively teaching error in matters of faith and morals (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 891).
Papal infallibility applies only when the pope is defining a doctrine of faith or morals. The teaching must concern divine revelation or truths closely connected to it. It does not apply to scientific claims, political views, interviews, homilies, or personal opinions. For example, in 1950, Pope Pius XII infallibly defined the dogma of Mary’s Assumption into heaven.
This also requires speaking ex cathedra (“from the chair”). The pope must speak in his official capacity as the successor of St. Peter and clearly intend to proclaim a doctrine that is binding on the entire Church. In Munificentissimus Deus, Pope Pius XII explicitly invoked his apostolic authority to “pronounce, declare, and define” the Assumption as a divinely revealed dogma.

Why Does the Church Need Cardinals?
¿Por qué la Iglesia Necesita Cardenales?
Cardinals are part of the governing structure of the Church and are best known for electing a new Pope during a conclave. They are bishops specially chosen — or “created” — by the Pope for this important role. Traditionally, cardinals were selected only from the clergy of Rome. Today, because the Church is worldwide, cardinals are chosen from dioceses across the globe.
To preserve their historic connection to Rome, each cardinal is still assigned a titular Roman church. Cardinals wear scarlet vestments, including the red skullcap and biretta, symbolizing their willingness to defend and spread the Faith, even to the shedding of their blood.

Hope Changes Everything
La Esperanza lo Cambia Todo
Hope helps us desire Heaven and trust in God’s promises. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) teaches that hope “responds to the aspiration to happiness which God has placed in the heart of every man” (CCC, 1818). It strengthens us to persevere through difficulties and keeps our hearts fixed on God. Here are three ways to renew and strengthen hope:
Shift your focus.
Do not allow past regrets, future fears, or present worries to dominate your thoughts. Read the daily Gospel before the news. When you catch yourself worrying or dwelling on negativity, intentionally redirect your mind toward God’s promises. Keep encouraging Scripture verses — such as Romans 8:37 — visible on your phone, mirror, or coffee maker as reminders of hope throughout the day.
Cambia tu enfoque.
Fight temptation with the opposite virtue.
In the spiritual life, virtues overcome vices. Counter doubt with acts of faith, complaints with gratitude, and comparison with encouragement and appreciation for others.
Become a source of hope.
Build others up rather than focusing on faults. Frequently ask, “What can I do to improve this situation?” Christian hope is not blind optimism, but confidence in Christ, the One who is “Faithful and True” (Revelation 19:11).

Matthew 10:37-42 — The Priorities of Discipleship
Mateo 10:37-42 — Las Prioridades del Discipulado
In this Gospel passage, Jesus speaks clearly about the demands of discipleship. At its heart is the question of priorities. For the early Christians, following Christ often meant risking imprisonment, persecution, or even death. To belong to Jesus required complete trust and surrender because only God is worthy of first place in our hearts and lives.
Faithful Catholic life still carries challenges today. Much of what Christ and His Church ask of us runs counter to the values of secular culture. Even apart from worldly pressures, each of us carries personal crosses — struggles, sacrifices, disappointments, and suffering. Yet Jesus never asks us to carry them alone. He invites us to follow Him and to walk beside Him through them.
The good news is that Jesus has already gone before us — from suffering to glory, from death to eternal life, and from sorrow to joy. Because of Him, our crosses are no longer meaningless. With His grace, we can choose each day to remain faithful, keep His commandments, and abide in His love. One day, in Heaven, we will see clearly that every sacrifice made for Christ was worth it.

Why do we honor Mary’s Immaculate Heart?
In the month of June, the Church honors the Immaculate Heart of Mary because of her unique relationship with Jesus and her faithful cooperation in God’s plan of salvation. “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord” (Luke 1:38). At the Annunciation, Mary freely consented to become the Mother of God’s Son. From the moment “the Word became flesh” (John 1:14) in her womb, her Immaculate Heart was united completely to the Heart of Jesus in love, trust, and obedience.
“A sword will pierce your own soul” (Luke 2:35). Although Mary was free from sin, she was not spared suffering. Simeon’s prophecy points to the deep sorrow she endured as she accompanied Jesus through His Passion and crucifixion. Mary teaches us how to trust God even in suffering and uncertainty.
“My Immaculate Heart will triumph.” These words, associated with Our Lady of Fatima, echo God’s promise of victory over evil. As Mother and Queen, Mary shares uniquely in her Son’s triumph. When we, too, say “yes” to God’s grace, Christ’s victory becomes our own.

Who Is My Neighbor?
¿Quién es mi Prójimo?
This question matters. In the Two Greatest Commandments, Jesus calls us to love God and to love our neighbor as ourselves. But that raises a real, practical question: who is our neighbor? Our Lady offers a clear answer. Through her example, we begin to see that our neighbors include:
Family
Familia
Mary’s first thought after the Annunciation was for her cousin Elizabeth. Despite the immense honor Mary had just received, she went in haste to serve Elizabeth. The first neighbors we’re called to love are the ones closest to us: those in our own home and family.
Friends
Amigos
Tradition holds that Mary and Jesus were close to the couple at the wedding in Cana. When the wine ran out, Mary noticed the need and acted, gently guiding things toward a solution. Loving our friends often looks the same — paying attention, stepping in quietly, and serving without needing recognition.
Those Who Suffer
Los Que Sufren
At the Cross, Jesus entrusted His mother to St. John. In that moment of deep loss, Mary and John were given to each other. When someone in your life is hurting, that person is your neighbor. Who is carrying something heavy right now? How can you stand with them?
Each Person We Meet
Cada Persona que Encontramos
As Queen of Heaven and Mother of the Church, Mary cares for all of us. To love God is to love those He loves — which means everyone. Sometimes the most meaningful act of love is the simplest: to pray for them, asking that they come to know her Son more deeply.

“Come, Holy Spirit!”
“¡Ven, Espíritu Santo!”
On the Feast of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles and ignited their mission to baptize and preach. This same Spirit also comes to our aid in our struggle for holiness, even in our prayer (Romans 8:26). This month, keep with you this powerful prayer: “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love!”

Why Do Catholics Call Mary Our Mother?
¿Por qué los Católicos Llaman a María Nuestra Madre?
Mary’s role in salvation history is to lead people to her Son. As the Church teaches, “The Virgin Mary… is the mother of the members of Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 963). At the Cross, Jesus says, “Behold your mother” (John 19:27), entrusting Mary not only to St. John but to every disciple. Because of her unique closeness to Jesus, she intercedes for us, always guiding us toward Him.
St. Joseph — The Quiet Strength Behind May
San José — La Fuerza Silenciosa detrás de Mayo
Though May is traditionally dedicated to Mary, it fittingly begins with the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. The Church invites us to honor St. Joseph and entrust our lives to his care, just as Jesus did during His hidden life on earth.
He protects.
St. Joseph safeguarded Mary when her pregnancy placed her at risk (Matthew 1:19) and led the Holy Family to safety in their flight from Herod (Matthew 2:14-15).
He provides.
As a carpenter, St. Joseph faithfully provided for Jesus and Mary. St. Teresa of Ávila famously wrote that she never asked anything of him without receiving help.
In St. Joseph, we’re given a quiet but steady guide — one who helps us step by step, follow God more faithfully on the path to heaven.

“That all who believe in Him might not perish but have eternal life.” This life is not the destination but the path. If we remain close to Him — whether in darkness, in turmoil, or at the foot of the Cross — we are not off course. We are being led, step by step, toward the life that does not end.

Heridas Gloriosas
Every Easter, we celebrate that Jesus definitively conquered sin, evil and death.
The Resurrection is not only a matter of faith; it has also been examined through historical and forensic inquiry. The New Testament accounts draw on early eyewitness testimony.
