About the Sacrament of Confirmation
Sobre el Sacramento de la Confirmación
“Confirmation deepens our baptismal life that calls us to be missionary witnesses of Jesus Christ in our families, neighborhoods, society, and the world.” — United States Catholic Catechism for Adults
Confirmation is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation, together with Baptism and the Eucharist, which form the foundation of the Christian life. At Confirmation, the baptized renew their baptismal promises and receive in a new way the gift of the Holy Spirit, which strengthens their bond with the Church and its members.
The relationship of the bishop, who presides over the Rite of Confirmation, with the local church community reminds us of our connection to the Universal Church. The sacred Chrism oil used during Confirmation symbolizes the community’s sharing of the Spirit and the anointing that prepares the confirmed to live lives that reflect Christ.
At Confirmation, diverse spiritual gifts are received that work together for the common good and the building up of the Church. The Holy Spirit pours love into our hearts so that we can become instruments of grace, serving others and bearing witness to Christ in both word and deed. Confirmation is not only an anointing but also a commissioning to live out our faith in the world.
