Fr. Hammond graduated summa cum laude from Sewanee — The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. He attended seminary at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, where he earned the Bachelor of Philosophy, Bachelor of Sacred Theology, Master of Divinity, and Master of Arts degrees.
At the Josephinum, he served as president of the student body, Master of Liturgical Ceremonies, Deputy Director of Human Formation, and representative to the Board of Trustees. He also earned the Licentiate in Canon Law (summa cum laude) from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum) in Rome.

Fr. Hammond was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Nashville on July 26, 2014. His first assignment was as Associate Pastor of Christ the King Church in Nashville, where he served for one year before moving to Rome to study canon law at the Angelicum (2015–2018).
Upon his return, he was appointed Pastor of St. Patrick Church in South Nashville, where he served for six years (2018–2024). In January 2019, he was appointed Vicar General and Judicial Vicar of the Diocese of Nashville. In July 2024, he was appointed Pastor and Rector of the Cathedral of the Incarnation, where he currently serves.

As Vicar General, Fr. Hammond exercises executive authority over the entire Diocese of Nashville on behalf of Bishop J. Mark Spalding. He oversees and directs various diocesan offices and ministries, supervises parish and diocesan activities, and serves on most diocesan consultative and corporate boards and councils.
As Judicial Vicar, he directs the diocesan tribunal, which handles marriage annulment cases and other canonical proceedings in accordance with Church law.

The Norms of the Diocese of Nashville address a wide range of topics, including liturgical norms for the reverent celebration of the Eucharist and other rites, general norms of pastoral conduct establishing ethical standards and boundaries for clergy and volunteers, and diocesan structures defining the roles of officials who assist the Bishop in governing the particular Church.
